Zeroif + present, present. Una verdad general. ("If you heat ice, it melts.")
Firstif + present, will + verbo. Una posibilidad futura real. ("If it rains, we'll stay in.")
Secondif + past, would + verbo. Irreal o poco probable ahora. ("If I had time, I'd help.")
Thirdif + past perfect, would have + participio. Irreal en el pasado. ("If I had known, I would have called.")

Si el resultado va primero, no se usa coma: We'll stay in if it rains.

Zero y first: situaciones reales

Normalmente puedes sustituir if por when.

If you don't water plants, they die. · If I drink coffee late, I can't sleep.

If you study tonight, you'll pass. · I'll call you if I need help.

En el resultado también pueden aparecer can, may, might o un imperativo: If it rains, take an umbrella.

Second y third: situaciones irreales

Con be, were es la forma estándar para todos los sujetos: If I were you... En la conversación informal también se oye was con I/he/she, pero la expresión fija es If I were you.

If I won the lottery, I'd travel the world. · If I were you, I'd apologize.

If I'd studied, I would have passed. · We'd have caught the train if we had left earlier.

Errores frecuentes

Poner will en la parte con if de un first conditional.

If it will rain, we'll stay home.
If it rains, we'll stay home.

En usos especiales, will puede aparecer después de if para expresar voluntad o disposición: If you'll wait here, I'll call him.

Poner would en la parte con if de un second conditional.

If I would have more money, I'd travel.
If I had more money, I'd travel.

Confundir second y third. «If I knew» (ahora) frente a «If I had known» (en el pasado).

Ejercicio rápido

Pon el verbo en la forma correcta. ¿Qué condicional es?

  1. If you ___ (mix) blue and yellow, you get green.
  2. If she ___ (call) me later, I'll tell her.
  3. If I ___ (be) taller, I'd play basketball.
  4. If they had left earlier, they ___ (catch) the bus.
  5. I'd buy that car if it ___ (be) cheaper.
Soluciones
  1. mix — zero (verdad general)
  2. calls — first (futuro real)
  3. were — second (irreal ahora; were es la forma estándar en este patrón)
  4. would have caught — third (irreal en el pasado)
  5. were — second (condición imaginaria; forma estándar con be)
