Oraciones de relativo: who, which, that en inglés

Oraciones de relativo en inglés: who, which, that, información esencial o adicional, uso de comas y casos en que se omite el pronombre.

sustantivo  ·  información adicional con who / which / that

who — personas. The woman who called you is here.
The phone which I bought is great. / My phone, which I bought last year, still works well.
The film that we saw…
where (lugares), whose (posesión), when (tiempos). the city where I grew up · the man whose car…

The book (that) I read… (objeto — se puede quitar: "The book I read")
The man who lives here… (sujeto — se mantiene)

Nota: en las non-defining clauses no se omite el pronombre relativo: My brother, who lives in Rome, …

Defining vs non-defining

Las non-defining clauses añaden información complementaria, van entre comas y usan who, which o whose, pero no that.

The students who passed got a certificate. (defining — identifica qué estudiantes)
My brother, who lives in Rome, is a chef. (non-defining — información adicional)
My laptop, which I bought last year, still works well. (non-defining — se refiere a una cosa)

Errores frecuentes

Repetir el pronombre sujeto/objeto.

The book that I read it was good.
The book that I read was good.

the car who I bought · the person which called
the car which/that I bought · the person who/that called

"that" en una non-defining. "My boss, that is German…" → My boss, who is German,…

Ejercicio breve

  1. That's the woman ___ won the prize.
  2. This is the house ___ we lived in.
  3. She has a friend ___ brother is famous.
  4. The restaurant ___ we ate dinner was lovely.
  5. Paris, ___ is the capital of France, is beautiful.
Soluciones

  2. which/that/— (objeto — se puede omitir; con where no se usa in: the house where we lived)
  3. whose (posesión)
  4. where (lugar; también: the restaurant we ate at)
  5. which (non-defining — no "that")
