Too vs enough en inglés

Aprende la diferencia entre too y enough, su posición en la frase, cuándo usar too much o too many y qué errores conviene evitar.

Too = demasiado

This jacket is too expensive. · You're driving too fast. · It's too late to call her.

Enough = lo necesario

Adjetivo + enough: The room isn't warm enough. · He's old enough to drive.
Enough + sustantivo: We have enough time. · There aren't enough chairs.

Too much / too many

Para hablar de una cantidad excesiva delante de un sustantivo, usa too much con los incontables y too many con los contables.

There's too much noise. · I get too many emails. · She drinks too much coffee.

Si la cantidad es insuficiente, usa too little o too few: too little time, too few chairs.

too … to / enough … to

Puedes añadir for someone antes de to.

It's too cold to swim. · The box was too heavy for me to lift.
She's old enough to vote. · Is it warm enough for us to sit outside?

Fíjate en el cambio de sentido: too cold to swim indica que no puedes nadar; warm enough to swim indica que sí puedes.

Errores frecuentes

Colocar enough antes del adjetivo. Con adjetivos, enough va después.

This coffee isn't enough hot.
This coffee isn't hot enough.

Usar «too much» antes de un adjetivo.

It's too much expensive.
It's too expensive.

Too much es correcto delante de un sustantivo incontable (too much sugar) o después de un verbo (You worry too much); solo debe evitarse delante de un adjetivo.

Confundir much y many. Los sustantivos contables llevan too many.

There are too much people here.
There are too many people here.
